If Not Now, When?

About a year ago I was sitting in a café having lunch with a friend and overheard someone speak a phrase that has in some ways become my mantra.  Two gentleman who hadn’t seen each other in quite some time, by the way the conversation was going, began to marvel at what had been happening in the other’s life.  One of them was sharing about their family and the other was sharing out his new business, each smiling and laughing about their journey.  One of them asked a question of the other about his future plans, and at the end of the answer he said, “if not now, when?”  It’s been over a year, but that phrase still sticks with me to this day.  So, I asked myself the same question…if not now, when?

So, it made me think about many of the things I had put off through the years.  When would I train to run that 5k, when would I take that cooking class, when would I go back to school, when would I start my business, when would I write my next book?  The list goes on and on.  And I have had so many reasons along the way, that seemed quite valid to me.  Well, actually some were just excuses.  Was it fear or lack of confidence or lack of support or lack of resources that was keeping from living up to my fullest potential?  Why did I delay my dreams and why have I gone along to just get by instead of
stepping out in faith and putting one foot in front of the other, fears and all, flaws and all?

This is a question I’ve asked myself many times and conversations I’ve had with many women when we talk about our past and our future.  There have been missed opportunities and doors that have been opened, only to be closed by a lack of something that many times we can’t put our fingers on.

Many times the waiting becomes unbearable and we begin to ask (out loud), “if not now when”.  It may not be us stopping ourselves, it might just not be happening for us in the time frame we feel it should.  One thing I know for sure is that God’s timing is perfect and what may have seemed like the dream job or dream relationship or dream home may not have been that at all.  His plans are to prosper us and not harm us and even if He opened the door and we didn’t walk through, He will provide other opportunities.  His mercies are new every day and in that, there are many more opportunities that are just waiting to be embarked upon.

I plan to write so much more on this topic in the posts to come, but for now I just want to say that sometimes it’s not the right time for us to push forward.  That’s when the patience and the faith and the perseverance kicks in.  But sometimes it is, and we have to ask ourselves why we might be holding back and what might be standing in our way.  If we are standing in our own way, tell yourself to step aside and allow the blessings to flow.  It’s ok to be a little fearful and it’s ok to be uncertain; it’s ok to be a little confused and it’s ok to wonder what’s next.  Well, if you never step out, you will never know.

So, now I ask you this question….when will you______________ (insert goal here)?
